Steps
Go to NCCCO's Verify CCO Online (VCO) system, linked from nccco.org/nccco/resources/verifying-certification.
Search by the candidate's NCCCO ID number, or by full legal name plus date of birth if the ID is unknown.
Confirm the returned certification type (e.g., Mobile Crane Operator, Tower Crane Operator, Articulating Crane Operator) matches the equipment the operator will run.
Check the listed expiration date — certifications issued through an accredited testing organization are valid for a maximum of 5 years under 29 CFR 1926.1427(d)(4).
If the physical card format is unfamiliar, cross-reference its designation code against NCCCO's published Certification Card Codes reference page.
Known gotchas
VCO confirms NCCCO certification status only — it does not confirm any separate state or city operator license (e.g., Chicago, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) that may also be legally required for the jobsite.
A valid VCO result does not satisfy the employer-side equipment evaluation required by 29 CFR 1926.1427(f); that make/model/configuration evaluation is a separate document the employer must keep on file.
