Steps
Determine pump flow rate and select the desired pressure switch range (commonly 30/50 or 40/60 psi)
Calculate required drawdown as pump flow rate multiplied by minimum acceptable pump run time
Select a tank whose rated drawdown meets or exceeds that calculated volume
Set tank air pre-charge to 2 psi below the switch cut-in setting, with the tank empty and unpowered
Verify actual cut-in/cut-out at the switch after installation and adjust to match the pre-charge setting
Known gotchas
Pre-charge must be checked with the tank empty and the system depressurized; checking under system pressure gives a false reading
Setting pre-charge at or above the cut-in pressure causes the bladder to bottom out and the pump to rapid-cycle, shortening motor life
Effective drawdown is only a fraction of total tank volume, so sizing off nameplate gallons alone will undersize the system
