Steps
Register on the AEMO API portal (dev.aemo.com.au) and review the getting-started guide, example payloads, and authentication method documentation
For aggregated public price/demand data, use AEMO's published aggregated price and demand data rather than the bidding API
For full disaggregated market data (5-minute and 30-minute dispatch data covering interconnector flows, regional reference price, demand, dispatchable generation/load, and ancillary services), use NEMWEB
Account for the fact the NEM has run on a 5-minute dispatch and settlement cycle since October 1, 2021, so AEMO publishes prices, demand, generator output, interconnector flows, bids, and forecasts every 5 minutes
Only use the separate NEM Dispatch Bidding API if you are a registered participant submitting Energy/FCAS/MNSP bids and offers
Known gotchas
The Dispatch Bidding API is participant-facing for submitting bids/offers, not for passively consuming public price/demand data; use NEMWEB or the aggregated data pages instead
Public data spans two granularities (5-minute and 30-minute) with different field sets, so confirm which one a downstream calculation expects
NEMWEB is oriented toward comprehensive/historical/disaggregated data pulls rather than lightweight real-time polling
