Steps
Confirm the sign is a Class 2-only field-wired multi-piece channel letter sign; under the 2023 UL 48 revision, effective for follow-up inspection instructions on July 1, 2024, such signs are labeled with a single UL Electric Sign mark on the raceway or power-supply enclosure rather than a separate mark on every letter.
If an AHJ fails the inspection for missing per-letter labels, provide documentation that the UL 48 Section Sign definition (Section 2.65) changed and Class 2-only field-wiring no longer requires the old per-piece marking.
Reference the current UL 48 standard, available through UL's free Digital View option, if the AHJ needs a citable source.
Confirm the single mark is actually present on the raceway or enclosure as required, since the rule change removes a labeling burden but not the underlying listing requirement.
Escalate to the manufacturer's UL contact if the AHJ still disputes compliance after documentation is provided.
Known gotchas
Signs inspected after July 1, 2024 are sometimes still failed under the pre-2023 rule by AHJs unaware of the change; a missing per-letter label doesn't automatically mean non-compliance.
The exemption from per-letter marking applies only when field-wiring between subassemblies is Class 2 only; any mains-voltage field wiring between sections still requires the old-style Section Sign marking.
