Documented steps POST https://api.tavily.com/extract with header Authorization: Bearer tvly-<key> Body: required 'urls' — a single URL string or an array of up to 20 URLs Options: extract_depth ('basic' default | 'advanced'), format ('markdown' default | 'text'), timeout (1.0-60.0s; defaults 10s basic / 30s advanced), include_images, include_favicon Optional 'query' reranks extracted chunks by relevance and enables chunks_per_source (1-5, default 3); without a query you get the full raw_content Parse response: results array (url, raw_content, images, favicon) plus a failed_results array with per-URL error reasons Reference: https://docs.tavily.com/documentation/api-reference/endpoint/extract
Known gotchas Hard cap of 20 URLs per request — more returns 400 Billing is batched: every 5 successful extractions = 1 credit (basic) or 2 (advanced); failed URLs are free advanced depth pulls tables/embedded content but roughly triples the default timeout — set 'timeout' explicitly for latency-sensitive agents Check failed_results on every call — partial failure is normal and does not error the request Error codes: 400 invalid input, 401 bad key, 429 rate limit, 432 plan limit exceeded
