Identify a CASE-compliant provider (e.g., Common Good Learning Tools CASE Network 2 mirror) that hosts the target standards framework; obtain the framework's GUID
Fetch the CFDocument (framework root) by GUID from the provider's CASE endpoint to retrieve framework metadata including title, creator, and subject area
Fetch CFItems for the framework using the CFItems endpoint filtered by the CFDocument GUID; each CFItem represents an individual standard with its human-readable fullStatement and machine-readable identifier
Fetch CFAssociations to understand the hierarchical and alignment relationships between standards; associations encode parent-child, isRelatedTo, and isPartOf relationships
Store the CFItem GUIDs in your content metadata when tagging content to standards; use CFAssociations to support browsing up and down the standards hierarchy in your alignment UI
Known gotchas
Framework GUIDs are provider-assigned and are not guaranteed to match across different CASE providers hosting the same framework; a GUID valid at one CASE host may not resolve at another host for the same state standard
CFItems and CFAssociations are paginated on large frameworks; implementations that only retrieve the first page of items will silently miss standards at lower levels of the hierarchy
Standards frameworks are versioned and are occasionally revised by the authoring agency; an alignment stored against a deprecated CFItem GUID may no longer resolve after a framework version update
