Select Class I (heated, maintains 40°F down to -30°F ambient) for climates with hard freezes and continuous protection requirements
Select Class II (insulated, frost-protected only) only where temperatures will not fall below 33°F

Known gotchas
Class II frost protection is often mistakenly treated as adequate freeze protection — it is not rated for hard-freeze climates and will not reliably prevent assembly damage below 33°F
Enclosure lock mechanisms must pass a 20-pound deadweight drop test under ASSE 1060 — non-conforming aftermarket locks can void the enclosure's listing
Poor internal drainage design causing water to pool inside the enclosure can itself cause freeze damage, even in a nominally Class I heated unit, if the heater ever fails
