Steps
Call GET https://marine-api.open-meteo.com/v1/marine with latitude/longitude and hourly parameters like wave_height, swell_wave_height, wind_wave_period.
Distinguish combined wave, wind-wave, and swell-wave components in the requested variable list — each has its own height/direction/period/peak-period fields.
Request daily aggregates (e.g. wave_height_max) instead of hourly if only daily summaries are needed.
Note the underlying model is DWD's ICON Wave, which covers ocean/coastal points only, not inland water bodies.
No API key is required for non-commercial use; only add a key/different base URL if upgrading to a commercial plan.
Known gotchas
Land or inland coordinates return null/empty marine data since ICON Wave only models open ocean.
Wave, wind-wave, and swell-wave variables are easy to conflate — pick the specific component your use case needs.
The free/non-commercial tier is rate-limited and not intended for high-volume production use without a paid plan.
