Documented steps

  1. Sign up and copy your authtoken from https://dashboard.ngrok.com/get-started/your-authtoken.
  2. Register it in the local config: `ngrok config add-authtoken <TOKEN>` (rewrites ~/.ngrok2/ngrok.yml).
  3. Or set the env var: `export NGROK_AUTHTOKEN=<TOKEN>`; environment overrides the config file.
  4. Verify by starting a tunnel: `ngrok http 8080` should print a forwarding URL rather than an authtoken error.
  5. For API access, add a separate API key: `ngrok config add-api-key <KEY>`.
