Steps

1. Pull the current "Standard Practices for Installation of Cellulose Insulation in the United States" technical bulletin from the Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association (cellulose.org) as the freely downloadable primary source for installation density guidance.
2. For sidewall dense-pack, calibrate the blowing machine to the manufacturer/CIMA-recommended minimum line pressure (commonly cited around 3.25 psi) to achieve minimum required settled density, verifying the specific product's stated design/declared density on its coverage chart rather than using a single universal number.
3. Use CIMA's dense-pack visual/tactile field indicators (material bouncing off surfaces, material traveling beyond roughly 6 ft/2 m from the hose, difficulty stopping flow by hand) as install-time QA checks.
4. If specifying "stabilized" cellulose, confirm the product is tested/labeled to settle no more than 5%, per CIMA's definition, rather than assuming any treated cellulose qualifies.
5. Cross-check any job-specific density/settling requirement against both the CIMA bulletin and the product manufacturer's own installation instructions, since manufacturers can set stricter requirements than the generic CIMA guidance.
