Steps

  1. Check permit necessity under NYC Construction Code Section 28-105.1, which requires a DOB permit to erect, install, alter, repair, or operate any sign or associated service equipment.
  2. Check the exemption list in Section 28-105.4.5 -- signs painted directly on a wall or fence, unilluminated wall signs of 6 sq ft or less, unilluminated temporary for-sale/for-rent ground or temporary signs of 12 sq ft or less, and certain temporary construction/holiday/civic-promotion signs do not need a permit.
  3. If a permit is required, file the Sign (SG) permit through DOB NOW: Build; if the sign is attached to a structure rather than mounted flat on a wall or facade, also file an Alteration (ALT) permit with the borough office.
  4. Separately, confirm who may physically perform or supervise the installation under Section 28-415.1, the Licensed Sign Hanger requirement -- this governs installation labor, not whether a permit is needed in the first place.
  5. Match the job to the correct sign-hanger license tier: Special Sign Hanger (signs up to 150 sq ft and up to 1,200 lb) or Master Sign Hanger (no size or weight limit); Section 28-415.2 exempts small signs (75 sq ft/25 lb or less), ground-supported signs, directional signs, and certain temporary construction signs from needing a licensed sign hanger at all.
  6. If the sign is illuminated and extends beyond the building line, also file for the annual Illuminated Sign Permit in addition to the Sign permit and any required Electrical permit.
