Access the Adyen Customer Area and navigate to Risk > Risk Profiles to create or modify a risk profile; risk profiles group risk rules and can be assigned to merchant accounts.
Add risk rules using the rule builder: define conditions based on payment attributes (amount, country, card BIN, shopper interaction) and assign a risk score weight or a hard block action.
Configure 3DS routing in Risk > 3D Secure > Routing Rules: set conditions under which 3DS should always be triggered (e.g., high-risk countries, elevated RevenueProtect scores), preferred, or skipped with an exemption.
Set the SCA exemption strategy per rule: request TRA exemption for low-risk transactions, always authenticate for high-risk transactions, or defer to the issuer's preference.
Assign the risk profile to your merchant account in the Merchant Account configuration and set the profile as default or as an override for specific payment flows.
Monitor outcomes in the Adyen Data Analytics dashboard; review blocked and reviewed transactions and refine rule thresholds based on false positive and fraud breakthrough rates.
Known gotchas
Risk profiles are not retroactively applied to existing authorizations; changes take effect only on new payment requests processed after the profile is activated.
Conflicting 3DS routing rules are evaluated by priority order; a lower-priority always-authenticate rule will be overridden by a higher-priority skip rule for the same transaction attributes.
RevenueProtect score thresholds should be calibrated against your specific transaction mix; default thresholds optimized for general merchants may generate excessive false positives for certain business models.
