Navigate to the NAIC consumer information source at content.naic.org or use the NAIC InsData application to search by company name or five-digit NAIC company code
Retrieve the company record to confirm the legal entity name, domicile state, lines of business, and current licensure status across jurisdictions
Access the Financial Data Repository (FDR) through NAIC's InsData portal to download the most recent annual or quarterly statutory financial statement for the company
Parse the financial statement for key solvency indicators: policyholder surplus, combined ratio, and Risk-Based Capital (RBC) ratio; NAIC's RBC framework flags companies below the authorized control level for regulatory action
For programmatic bulk access, submit a data request to NAIC's data services team at idp@naic.org; bulk CSV exports covering multiple companies require a data license agreement
Known gotchas
NAIC codes are assigned per legal entity; a large insurer group may contain dozens of individual NAIC-coded entities, each filing separately—verify you are querying the correct underwriting entity, not a holding company
NAIC does not expose a public REST API for financial data; integration requires either the InsData web portal, contracted bulk data feeds, or state-level SERFF filings—do not assume a JSON endpoint exists
RBC ratios and financial data reflect the most recently filed statutory statement, which may lag the current quarter by up to 90 days for quarterly filings
