Steps Register for a free Basic developer account at developer.edamam.com to get an app_id and app_key Call the Food Database parser endpoint with the menu item or ingredient name to retrieve matching food entries and allergen/diet labels For a full dish, submit its ingredient list to the Nutrition Analysis (nutrition-details) endpoint for aggregated nutrition and diet/health labels For single raw ingredients, use the simpler nutrition-data endpoint instead of the recipe endpoint Cache results and respect the free-tier rate limit before scaling to a paid plan
Known gotchas If Active User tracking is enabled on your app_id, omitting the required user-ID header causes requests to fail The free Basic tier is explicitly not intended for production traffic volumes Nutrition labels are inferred from parsed ingredient text, so ambiguous menu item names can return incorrect matches
