Design and commission a delayed-egress locking system for a retail, museum, or similar space where merchandise/collection security requires a brief exit delay.

Steps

1. Confirm the occupancy is one where delayed egress is permitted under the specific building code edition adopted locally, and that a sprinkler or detection prerequisite for the space is satisfied.
2. Configure the delay period and confirm it does not exceed the maximum allowed by the adopted code edition, and coordinate the exact required exit-sign wording with the AHJ.
3. Wire the system so the delay electronics deactivate immediately upon sprinkler activation, fire alarm/smoke detection activation, or loss of power to the lock, always allowing free egress under those conditions.
4. Confirm the door is not the sole means of egress from the space, since delayed egress locking is generally not permitted where no other compliant egress path exists.
5. Coordinate with the fire alarm contractor and AHJ for acceptance testing and sign-off before occupancy.
