Steps
Note the 2020 NEC change: a new general Article 800 ("General Requirements for Communications Systems") was introduced, and the prior Article 800 (communications circuits specifics) was renumbered to Article 805.
Note the 2023 NEC continued consolidating overlapping requirements (entrance cable listing, CATV/network-powered broadband entrance rules, etc.) into the general Article 800 rather than repeating them in each specific article (805, 820, 830, 840).
Note the 2026 NEC's structural change: Chapter 8 lost its historical stand-alone status, so the general rules in Chapters 1-4 now apply to Chapter 8 installations, and Article 800's scope has been narrowed toward outside-plant/building-entrance communications wiring.
Before citing a specific article/section number, confirm which NEC edition (2020, 2023, or 2026) the jurisdiction has actually adopted, since AHJs typically lag several years behind an NFPA publication cycle.
Cross-reference the specific cable-type article (805/820/830/840) for the actual installation, since the general Article 800 requirements layer on top of, rather than replace, those specific articles.
Known gotchas
Local adoption lag is the biggest trap — many AHJs are still enforcing 2020 or 2023 NEC in 2026; don't assume the newest edition automatically applies.
Because Chapter 8 was historically stand-alone (Chapters 1-4 didn't apply to it), older reference material and even some inspectors may not yet reflect the 2026 change that folds general rules back in — verify directly with the AHJ.
