Steps

  1. Recognize that GTFS-Flex was merged directly into the core GTFS specification (officially adopted March 2024) rather than remaining a separate MobilityData extension repo — the older MobilityData/gtfs-flex repo is deprecated in favor of the main GTFS docs.
  2. Reference the demand-responsive service examples in the current GTFS documentation for how to model zone-based pickup/drop-off and route-deviation services.
  3. Use GTFS-Flex definitions for scheduled/semi-scheduled demand-responsive transit (DRT) service areas, and use GBFS/MDS for on-demand, free-floating or docked micromobility fleets — the two are complementary, not overlapping, specs.
  4. If your trip planner needs to present both fixed-route/flex transit and micromobility legs, ingest GTFS-Flex data and GBFS feeds through separate pipelines and merge at the itinerary-planning layer.
  5. Confirm your trip-planning engine actually supports GTFS-Flex before building around it, since support varies by tool and version.
