Download the free GWG Sign & Display Preflight Profile and specification document from gwg.org
Determine the job's average viewing distance and any scaling factor, since the profile's resolution/quality checks scale with those inputs
Load the profile into a supporting preflight tool (callas pdfToolbox and Enfocus PitStop both publish compatible profiles)
Confirm the file meets base PDF/X-4 requirements (ICC-based output intent, embedded fonts, correct transparency handling) before applying sign-specific checks
Run preflight and resolve flagged issues (low-res images for the stated viewing distance, missing bleed, spot color mismatches) before sending to RIP
Known gotchas
The correct profile variant depends on viewing distance/scale factor — using a generic commercial-print PDF/X-4 profile instead of the Sign & Display variant misjudges acceptable resolution
PDF/X-4 permits RGB/Lab color with live transparency; RIPs or workflows expecting flattened PDF/X-1a input can mishandle these files
The GWG specification is a voluntary industry guideline layered on top of the ISO PDF/X-4 standard, not an ISO standard itself
