Register for API access to ClassIT+, the NMFTA-operated successor to the discontinued SMC3 FastClass/NMFC data product
Authenticate API requests using the credentials issued during onboarding
Query the classification endpoint with the commodity description or NMFC item number
Retrieve the returned class, sub-classification rules, and any density-based breakpoints that apply to the commodity
Cache classification lookups locally with a refresh policy, since the underlying NMFC data updates on NMFTA's publication schedule

Known gotchas
SMC3 sunset its FastClass and NMFC data products in favor of ClassIT+, which is now operated directly by NMFTA — legacy SMC3 FastClass integrations must be migrated
Freight class for many commodities is density-based, so accurate dimensions and weight must be supplied or the returned class will be wrong
Classification data changes with periodic NMFC rule updates, so a stale local cache can silently apply an outdated class
