Steps Obtain a WebKey via Login.gov and the FMCSA Developer 'My WebKeys' page as described in the QCMobile API getting-started guide. Call GET https://mobile.fmcsa.dot.gov/qc/services/carriers/name/{name}?webKey=YOUR_WEB_KEY with the URL-encoded company legal or DBA name. Add the optional start and size query parameters to page through results when a name matches multiple carriers. Inspect each returned record's DOT number and docket numbers to disambiguate similarly named companies. Cross-check the top candidate against a direct DOT-number lookup before treating the name match as authoritative.
Known gotchas FMCSA's own docs note results are limited to the first 50 carriers per call — use the start parameter to page beyond that. Common mover names (e.g. 'Allied', 'Elite Moving') return many unrelated companies; name search alone is not a reliable unique identifier.
