Choose furring orientation opposite the cladding orientation: vertical furring for horizontal siding, horizontal furring (or a cross-furred system) for vertical siding such as board-and-batten
Size the airspace/cavity to allow drainage and airflow behind the cladding

Provide top and bottom venting or weep openings so the cavity can drain and dry
Fasten furring through any continuous insulation into structural framing with fasteners rated for the load and insulation thickness being penetrated
