Register as a Parchment Receive member and obtain network credentials; configure your receiving endpoint (SFTP drop or web service URL) in the Parchment portal
Verify the sending institution is a Parchment Send member and can transmit PESC XML or SPEEDE EDI formatted transcripts; confirm the data format your SIS can ingest
Implement the inbound transcript handler at your endpoint: accept the delivered file, validate the PESC XML schema, parse student identifying fields (SSN last four, DOB, name) to match to your local record
For institutions using the Parchment API (as documented for Banner and similar SIS integrations), configure automated polling or webhook receipt to trigger SIS import workflows upon transcript arrival
Test end-to-end with Parchment's sandbox network; confirm the transcript XML parses cleanly and student matching logic handles edge cases such as name changes or missing identifiers
Known gotchas
PESC XML and SPEEDE EDI are both supported, but not all sending institutions produce both; negotiate the format with the sending institution before building the ingest pipeline
Student identity matching is not standardized: some transcripts include SSN fragments, others only name and date of birth; a rigid matching strategy causes duplicates or failed imports for students whose data differs slightly between institutions
Parchment's auto-delivery feature for Premium Receive members requires a pre-configured delivery endpoint that is always reachable; transient connectivity failures can cause transcripts to queue without notification
