Steps
Register for a free OpenEI API key.
Send a GET request to the utility_rates endpoint with your api_key, a version parameter, and a format (e.g., json).
Specify a location using either an address parameter or a lat/lon pair (not both).
Set the detail parameter to minimal or full depending on how much rate-structure data you need.
Use the limit and co_limit parameters to cap the number of rates and companies returned per request.
Known gotchas
You must supply either an address or a lat/lon pair — supplying both, or neither, is invalid.
The database covers electricity utility rate structures, not propane/heating-fuel pricing — useful only for comparing a customer's total energy costs, not for propane pricing itself.
Rate data is community-curated and update frequency varies by utility, so cross-check critical rate details against the utility's own tariff before relying on them.
