Track Google AI Overview and AI Mode appearances for target keywords using DataForSEO's SERP API

Steps
For standard Google SERP requests, set load_async_ai_overview: true in the task payload so DataForSEO retrieves AI Overview content even when it loads asynchronously in the live SERP
Check the item_types array in returned results for an ai_overview entry, which DataForSEO includes automatically whenever it detects the feature
For Google's separate AI Mode interface, use the dedicated ai_mode endpoint (a distinct search-engine type in the Google SERP API, currently English-language only) rather than expecting it inside standard organic results
Parse the structured JSON response for cited sources/links within the AI Overview or AI Mode response to track brand/content citations
Budget separately for AI Mode requests, which are priced differently from standard SERP endpoint calls
Known gotchas
AI Overview presence is inconsistent and query-dependent - absence in one pull doesn't mean it never appears for that keyword
AI Mode is currently limited to English-language Google locations, not a global-parity feature yet
Because these are newer endpoints, field names and response shape are more likely to change than DataForSEO's long-stable organic SERP schema - version-check before relying on it in production
