Steps
Confirm both parties are FedNow participants, or that one side is the joint account backing an eligible private-sector instant payment scheme
Initiate the LMT only within its available window — nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. ET, and any time on weekends and holidays — distinct from FedNow's 24x7x365 payment message window
Use the LMT to prefund or rebalance the master account or joint account ahead of anticipated daytime instant-payment settlement volume
Monitor the master account balance in real time immediately after the transfer to confirm liquidity is positioned before the next FedNow payment window opens
Reconcile LMT activity alongside other FedNow payment flows as part of the institution's broader intraday liquidity monitoring process
Known gotchas
FedNow does not mandate prefunding the way some private-sector instant-payment rails do — confirm your liquidity model actually requires LMTs before building them into a critical path
LMTs are restricted to the stated overnight/weekend/holiday window and are not a general anytime liquidity tool — attempting one during normal daytime hours won't behave as expected
LMTs move funds between master/joint accounts at the Reserve Bank rather than issuing customer-facing payment messages, so they must be modeled separately from pacs.008/pacs.002 payment reconciliation
