Steps
Identify all fully enclosed openings on equipment (ladder rungs, guardrails, decorative cutouts, etc.) that require entrapment testing.
Insert the torso probe into each enclosed opening; if it does not pass through to the required depth, the opening is generally treated as compliant for torso entrapment.
If the torso probe does pass through, follow up with the head probe to check for head/neck entrapment risk in that same opening.
Use a fish-shaped probe to check partially bound (non-fully-enclosed) openings for potential neck entrapment, since the head/torso probes target fully enclosed openings.
Record every tested opening's dimensions and pass/fail result, since entrapment/strangulation hazards are treated as high-severity findings requiring prompt correction.
Known gotchas
Standard probe dimensions and pass/fail criteria are specified in the applicable ASTM/CPSC testing procedure — use calibrated, correctly sized probes rather than improvised measuring tools.
Openings that look too small to worry about can still fall in the critical entrapment range; test systematically rather than relying on visual judgment alone.
