Request API credentials from Trellis by contacting their sales team; the API is not self-serve and requires a commercial agreement
Once credentialed, authenticate using the method specified in your Trellis API documentation (token-based per the support portal at support.trellis.law/trellis-api)
Query the case search endpoint with party name, state, and county or court parameters to retrieve matching state trial court cases
Use the returned case identifiers to fetch detailed docket entries, rulings, and documents via the dedicated rulings and documents endpoints
Use the party endpoint to enumerate all cases associated with a specific attorney, firm, or company across Trellis-covered jurisdictions
Known gotchas
Trellis covers 45 states at the trial court level; check coverage for your target jurisdiction at trellis.law/coverage before building a workflow that assumes completeness
State trial court records are often updated with delays relative to actual filing; Trellis data currency varies by court's electronic reporting cadence
Document retrieval may require court-level permissions; some jurisdictions restrict public access to certain case document types even through third-party APIs
