  1. Request a free API key by submitting an email address and agreeing to the NASS Terms of Service
  2. Build a query against GET /api/api_GET combining WHAT (e.g. commodity_desc), WHERE (e.g. state_alpha), and WHEN (e.g. year) parameters
  3. Use suffix operators (__GE, __LE, __LIKE, __NE, etc.) on parameters for range/pattern filters
  4. Pass key=<api_key> and format=JSON|CSV|XML in the query string
  5. Narrow WHERE/WHEN filters so results stay under the per-call cap
