Steps
Request Asset Management API access via public.railinc.com/developers/get-started, specifying the Umler system.
Confirm your organization is an authorized equipment owner/reporting party in Umler before attempting write operations.
Use the Umler Equipment Transaction service to add, modify, or delete equipment characteristic data for a given equipment ID.
Validate the submitted data against Umler Data Specifications Manual field rules; the system prompts for changes if validation fails.
Query the record afterward with Equipment Full View Query to confirm the transaction was applied.
Known gotchas
This is a write API tied to equipment ownership records used industry-wide for car placement and interchange - incorrect submissions can propagate to other stakeholders' systems.
Access is gated behind Railinc customer credentialing; there is no self-serve API key signup.
