  1. List existing fields with GET /v2/publications/:publicationId/custom_fields to avoid duplicate names
  2. Create a field with POST .../custom_fields, specifying kind (e.g. string, list) and a display name
  3. For dropdown/list-kind fields, supply the options array
  4. Reference the field's name (not id) in Create/Update Subscription's custom_fields array to set values
  5. Update or delete fields via PUT/PATCH/DELETE on .../custom_fields/:id
