Steps
Confirm GOES-19 became the operational GOES-East satellite on April 7, 2025, replacing GOES-16 (GOES-16 is now backup/standby); use the noaa-goes19 bucket for current East imagery and noaa-goes18 for GOES-West.
Browse the bucket's product prefixes (e.g. ABI-L1b-RadC, ABI-L2-CMIPC, full-disk, mesoscale) by year/day-of-year/hour to locate the desired product and scan sector.
Download the netCDF4 file(s) for the desired band/channel and timestamp.
Open with a library such as xarray or satpy that supports GOES-R ABI netCDF4 conventions to extract projection and radiance/reflectance data.
For archived East-sector imagery predating the April 2025 transition, query the noaa-goes16 bucket instead.
Known gotchas
Using the wrong satellite bucket (goes16 vs goes19) for a given date silently returns backup-satellite or unavailable data rather than an explicit error.
Files are named by ABI mode, channel, and scan start/end timestamps in Julian-day format, not calendar date — parsing requires care.
Full-disk, CONUS, and mesoscale scan sectors are separate product prefixes with different temporal cadences and file counts.
