Steps

1. Download the current GS-42 standard document from greenseal.org (Commercial and Institutional Cleaning Services) and confirm the edition and date shown on the cover page before using it, since editions are corrected periodically.
2. As of this writing the standard is GS-42 Edition 2.3, originally issued July 2015 with corrections/clarifications applied in July 2024 — verify this is still the listed current edition on greenseal.org before relying on any specific clause.
3. Review core requirement areas: cleaning and waste procedures, use of Green Seal-certified or equivalently vetted products/equipment, staff training and communication, and disinfection limited to EPA-registered products used per label.
4. Prepare documentation (product lists, SDS references, training logs, standard operating procedures) mapped to each GS-42 section for submission to Green Seal.
5. Submit the application through Green Seal's certification process and address any nonconformities identified during review before certification is granted.
6. Track the recertification/audit cycle required to maintain GS-42 status rather than treating it as a one-time achievement.
