Steps
Confirm the operation is in a LAANC-enabled grid (FAA lists ~700+ participating airports) via the FAA UAS Data Exchange page
Choose an FAA-approved UAS Service Supplier (USS) such as Aloft or Airspace Link and create an account
Submit flight details (location, altitude up to the facility map ceiling, date/time window) through the USS app or API
Receive automated approval for standard grid altitudes, or a 'further coordination request' routed to FAA for anything requiring manual review
Keep the authorization reference available during flight for accountability to ATC/FAA if queried
Cancel or amend the authorization in the same USS tool if the flight is scrubbed or changes
Known gotchas
LAANC only grants approval up to the facility map ceiling for that grid cell; anything higher requires a further coordination request with unpredictable turnaround
Not all controlled airspace is LAANC-enabled everywhere (national security UAS restrictions and non-participating facilities still require other routes like manual FAADroneZone authorization)
Each USS has its own account/API even though authorizations flow through the same FAA backend, so credentials are not portable between providers
