Validate your outbound ACORD XML messages against the published XSD schema before transmitting to trading partners; schema validation catches structural errors before they cause rejection at the receiver
When receiving ACORD messages from carriers or MGAs, parse the XML using a schema-aware parser and extract the business data into your internal model; log any unknown or unrecognized elements for review rather than silently discarding them
Version-stamp all ACORD messages with the standard version number used; trading partners may be on different ACORD versions and require transformation between versions at the integration layer

Known gotchas

ACORD standards are versioned and not backward-compatible in all cases; confirm which ACORD version your trading partner supports before building the integration, as version mismatches are a common source of rejection
ACORD XML schemas are large and contain many optional elements; a valid ACORD message may still be rejected by a trading partner if required business-context elements (not required by the schema) are absent—review the partner's implementation guide
ACORD membership and access to full schema libraries may require a fee; open implementations should verify they have appropriate licensing before distributing software that embeds ACORD schemas
