Steps
Provision a Vertex O Series environment and obtain the REST API endpoint and credentials from the Vertex Developer Network
Configure tax jurisdictions, tax areas, and product/customer taxability categories in O Series before making calculation calls
Send a Calculation API request for a sales transaction (quotation or invoice type) including line items, ship-from/ship-to addresses, and any customer exemption data
Parse the response for the jurisdiction-level tax conclusion and apply the calculated tax to the transaction
For procurement transactions, call the Calculation API with the accrual or invoice transaction type to determine use-tax accrual, and use the Distribute Tax operation to allocate tax across GL accounts as needed
Known gotchas
Calculation accuracy depends entirely on correctly configured tax areas and product taxability mapping — a misconfiguration produces a wrong tax amount without raising an error
Quotation-type calls do not create the permanent audit-trail record Vertex uses for compliance reporting; only invoice-type (committed) calls do
O Series is typically deployed per customer (on-prem or dedicated cloud instance), so the API base URL and authentication details are customer-specific rather than a single shared multi-tenant endpoint
