Steps
Define channels on an event (name, key, optional color/index) to pre-assign groups of seats — e.g. VIP or sponsor blocks — hidden from general buyers by default.

Known gotchas
Channel names and colors are never exposed to ticket buyers — only the channel id is public, so don't rely on channel metadata for buyer-facing UI.
Assigning part of a GA area's capacity to a channel creates a compound partition identifier that booking calls must use — the plain area label will not work for that partition.
Categories (pricing/accessibility grouping) and channels (access control) are distinct and easy to conflate — a seat can carry a category and a channel restriction simultaneously.
