Steps
Under accessories: in deploy.yml, define an entry like mysql: with image: mysql:8.0
Target where it runs with host, hosts, role, roles, tag, or tags — accessory hosts don't need to be in the main servers list
Add env: for credentials/config, and use directories: (auto-created on host) or files: (uploaded from repo, ERB-evaluated) for config/data persistence
Optionally set port: for host:container port mapping and network: if not using the default kamal network
Boot it with kamal accessory boot <name>; use kamal accessory --help for the full command set (reboot, logs, remove, etc.)
Known gotchas
Accessories are not zero-downtime — rebooting one causes a brief service interruption, unlike the main app's proxied rolling deploy
Accessories are not updated by kamal deploy — a config or image change requires an explicit kamal accessory reboot/boot
Setting an owner on mounted files or directories requires root access on the host, and mode/owner only apply with the hash form of files:/directories:, not the shorthand local:remote string form
