Steps

  1. Size the branch circuit/feeder per 625.42, treating EV charging load as continuous, unless an automatic load management system (ALMS) is used, in which case the equipment load may be limited to the ALMS-permitted maximum instead of full EVSE nameplate rating
  2. Note the 2023 NEC now allows cord-and-plug EVSE with adjustable settings (not just fixed-in-place equipment) to use the ALMS load-limiting allowance
  3. Determine ventilation needs per 625.52: mechanical supply-and-exhaust ducted to the outdoors is required only if the EVSE is listed for indoor charging with ventilation; EVSE listed for indoor use without ventilation needs none
  4. Confirm GFCI protection at the EVSE or upstream breaker per 625.54; the 2023 NEC extended GFCI protection to 250V circuits, sweeping in 240V EV circuits
