Steps
Confirm you (or your client) are an existing Benevity Spark client — API access is granted through your Benevity Client Success Manager, not self-service signup
Request API credentials for the appropriate environment: production (api.benevity.org) or staging (api.benevity-staging.org)
Use the Cause Search API to let donors/employees discover your nonprofit in Benevity's Cause Database by keyword, location, or category
Use the Giving API to integrate donation flows into an external application (e-commerce checkout, rewards program, dedicated giving site) that routes funds through Benevity
Follow the implementation guides for receipt handling (e.g. the get-receipt flow) so donors receive proper tax documentation
Test thoroughly in the staging environment before cutting over to production, since Benevity disburses real matched/donated funds through this integration
Known gotchas
This is a partner/enterprise-gated API — public docs exist, but you cannot get working credentials without an existing commercial Benevity relationship (Spark client)
Benevity sits on top of real corporate giving and matching-fund disbursement, so sandbox/staging testing is essential before any production cutover
The Cause Search API and Giving API are distinct products with different purposes (nonprofit discovery vs. donation processing) — confirm which one a given integration actually needs
