Steps
Request Asset Management API access via public.railinc.com/developers/get-started, specifying Component Tracking.
Authenticate as a registered Component Registry participant (components are registered by manufacturers/reconditioners at time of manufacture or assembly).
Call Query Component by Component Features, providing wheel serial number plus stamped manufacturer code/year/month for wheelsets, cast year+month+manufacturer+pattern/serial number for bolsters/sideframes, or catalog/cast/serial number for couplers.
Alternatively call Query Component by Component ID or Query Component by Equipment ID if you already have a registered component ID or its affiliated equipment ID.
Confirm the queried component matches an active registration in the Umler Component Registry before using it downstream.
Known gotchas
Query fields differ by component type - matching on the wrong combination of fields (e.g., wheel fields against a bolster query) returns no result.
Read-only query access still requires Railinc credentialing, not just component registration.
