Steps

  1. Hold a preconstruction meeting with the shoring (SOE) contractor, waterproofing applicator, and structural engineer before excavation to agree on sequencing — the membrane must attach to a temporary shoring wall before the permanent concrete wall is poured against it, so conflicts here are expensive to fix later.
  2. Get full SOE shop drawings to the waterproofing applicator before membrane detailing begins — soldier-pile-and-lagging vs. shotcrete/soil-nail walls present different substrate conditions that change how the membrane is fastened and detailed.
  3. Sequence temporary bracing (struts/rakers) removal explicitly with the waterproofing installer, since struts are typically pulled during concrete placement and rakers after — plan how the membrane and any penetrations at brace points get patched as elements are removed.
  4. Conduct and document a pre-pour inspection (photos, punch-list sign-off) of the entire membrane surface, laps, and penetrations, since there is no post-pour opportunity to inspect or repair a blindside membrane once concrete is placed against it.
  5. Assign responsibility in the preconstruction meeting for protecting the exposed membrane from damage by subsequent trades (rebar placement, formwork, foot traffic) between installation and pour.
