Steps
Confirm the current edition in force: ANSI/TIA-606-C (published July 2017) governs administration of telecommunications infrastructure.
Determine the correct administration Class for the job: Class 1 (single telecom room, single building), Class 2 (single building, multiple TRs), Class 3 (campus, multiple buildings), or Class 4 (multi-site enterprise).
Assign a unique identifier scheme (building, floor/TR, rack, panel, port) sized to the chosen class, and apply it consistently to cables, panels, racks, pathways, and spaces.
Label every cable within roughly 300 mm (12 in) of each termination point with its unique identifier.
Document firestop locations, grounding busbars, and pathway/space identifiers as part of the same administration record, not just cable labels alone.
Known gotchas
Picking too low a class (e.g., Class 1 on a multi-building campus) produces an identifier scheme that can't scale — right-size the class to the facility, not just the current phase.
Labeling only the outlet end and skipping the patch-panel/TR end is a common shortcut that breaks TIA-606 compliance and slows future troubleshooting.
