Steps
Confirm the current edition: ANSI/TIA-942-C (published May 2024) is the current revision and adds coverage for single balanced twisted-pair horizontal cabling, AI/high-density workloads, and micro edge data centers.
Classify the facility's target infrastructure Rating: Rated-1 (single capacity components, single non-redundant path), Rated-2 (redundant components, single path), Rated-3 (redundant components, multiple independent concurrently-maintainable paths), or Rated-4 (redundant components, multiple active independent paths, fault-tolerant).
Design the cabling topology (entrance room, MDA, IDA/HDA, EDA per the standard's hierarchical model) to match the target Rating level's redundancy requirements.
At the equipment outlet, use TIA-568.3-compliant connectors (LC/MPO required at the EO per the -C revision) even though other 568.3-compliant connector types are allowed elsewhere in the channel.
Pursue formal TIA-942 Rated certification through an accredited third-party assessor if the project needs a certified (not just designed-to) data center.
Known gotchas
"TIA-942-compliant" and "TIA-942 Rated-certified" are not the same claim — certification requires third-party assessment against the standard, not just following its design guidance.
Don't confuse TIA-942's Rated-1 through Rated-4 with the separate Uptime Institute Tier system — they cover similar concepts but are different, unrelated certification programs.
