Steps

  1. Treat any natural element that functions as climbable/elevated play equipment (a log used as a balance beam, a boulder used to access a platform, etc.) as subject to the same ASTM F1487 use-zone and surfacing requirements as manufactured equipment.
  2. Install impact-attenuating surfacing under and around any natural climbing element above the applicable fall-height threshold, sized the same way as for manufactured equipment.
  3. Inspect natural materials for hazards specific to their material type — wood rot/splitting, insect damage, sharp breaks in stone, unstable boulder placement — in addition to standard equipment checks.
  4. Maintain the same use-zone clearance and overlap checks around natural elements as around manufactured structures.
  5. Involve a CPSI or design professional during planning, since natural playgrounds often require professional interpretation to map ASTM/CPSC requirements onto non-standard materials.
