Steps
Enable the Barcode Tracking module in Passare per the guide at passare.com/guides/barcode-tracking-guide
Print barcodes for the decedent, personal effects, and defined facility locations
Scan the decedent's barcode at each custody transfer point (receiving, cremation chamber, storage, release) using the Passare mobile app or a handheld scanner
Review the automatically generated custody audit trail attached to the case record
For crematories running SRS instead, use the equivalent Phoenix module, which issues its own per-case barcode and companion scanning app
Known gotchas
This is a closed, platform-native module; there is no independent cross-vendor chain-of-custody API
Adopting it locks the crematory into that case-management vendor's ecosystem (e.g., Gather's KeepTrack works only with Gather)
The software only logs what staff actually scan, so it still depends on manual discipline at each transfer point
