Steps
Identify which Critical Tracking Events (CTEs) apply to your product/process: harvesting, cooling, initial packing, first land-based receiving (for fishing-vessel food), shipping, receiving, and transformation
For each applicable CTE, pull the FDA-defined Key Data Elements (KDEs) you must capture, centered on the traceability lot code, ship/receive dates, and product description
Wire your existing shipment/temperature tracking system to tag each event record with its CTE type and required KDEs, not just raw sensor data
Store the traceability lot code consistently across all systems touching the product, since KDEs are linked across CTEs by lot code
Plan your compliance timeline against the current compliance date of July 20, 2028, per FDA's compliance date extension
Known gotchas
The Food Traceability Rule compliance date was extended from the original January 20, 2026 to July 20, 2028 - don't build against the old date
FSMA 204 is a records/data-capture regulation, not an API you call - there's no FDA endpoint to hit; this is about structuring your own data to satisfy CTE/KDE requirements
KDEs differ by CTE type - a shipping event and a cooling event don't require the same fields, so one generic schema across all events will likely under-capture what's required
