Steps
Complete the ABN Lookup Web Services Agreement/application on abr.business.gov.au to receive an authentication GUID by email
Choose a protocol: full SOAP web services or the more limited JSON-based ABN/name search endpoints
Call the ABN search method with the GUID and an ABN to retrieve registration status, entity name, GST registration status, and address
For bulk lookups, use the postcode-based method with optional date-updated/date-registered filters to retrieve a list of ABNs
Cache results locally and refresh on a matching cadence, since ABR data is updated hourly
Known gotchas
The GUID-based access model requires an upfront registration/approval step before any calls succeed — there is no anonymous or instantly self-serve API key
JSON support covers only a subset of methods (primarily ABN and name search); many advanced search methods remain SOAP-only
Historical/cancelled ABNs still return records, so always check the current registration status field rather than assuming a returned record means an active, GST-registered entity
