Steps
Call the forecast-capable carbon intensity/electricity mix endpoints under the Electricity Maps developer hub for a given zone
Request the desired temporal granularity (5-minute, 15-minute, hourly, or aggregated daily/monthly/quarterly/yearly) rather than assuming a fixed default
Expect life-cycle emission factors by default when reading carbon intensity values, expressed in gCO2eq/kWh
Use forecast data, which the forecasting engine typically produces up to about 72 hours ahead, to plan flexible load shifting or charging schedules
Combine forecast carbon intensity with forecast price/flow signals where the zone supports them
Known gotchas
Forecast horizon and signal availability (carbon, price, flows) vary by zone; not every zone supports every forecast signal
Default granularity is hourly; finer granularity (5/15-min) must be explicitly requested and may not be available for every zone
Carbon intensity values use life-cycle emission factors by default, which differ from direct/production-only emission factors
