Steps
Obtain the machine and extruder definition JSON files (the same ones bundled with Cura) since CuraEngine needs -j definitions rather than a GUI profile.
Run CuraEngine slice with -j <machine_def.json>, -e0 -j <extruder_def.json>, -l <input.stl>, and -o <output.gcode> as the basic invocation.
Override individual settings with repeated -s <setting>=<value> flags for per-job customization (e.g. layer height, infill density).
Use --next to chain multiple models into one sequential, one-at-a-time gcode job if needed.
Set the CURA_ENGINE_SEARCH_PATH environment variable if definition files live outside the default search paths.
Known gotchas
CuraEngine's CLI itself is thinly documented officially — much practical knowledge comes from manpages, Cura GUI's own internal invocation, and community guides rather than a polished CLI reference.
CuraEngine 5.x has settings that are effectively required but undocumented; omitting them can produce silently wrong or failed slices — validate against known-good Cura-exported settings first.
CuraEngine only reads the "default_value" field from .def.json files and does not evaluate the computed-default expressions Cura's GUI uses, so definitions copied verbatim from Cura can behave differently when driven from the CLI.
