Use the DeepL API context parameter to disambiguate short, low-context strings like UI labels without translating the context text itself

Steps Identify short/ambiguous source strings (product names, button labels, headlines) that translate poorly without surrounding context Send the surrounding sentence(s) or a short description in the context field of the /v2/translate request, in the same language as the source text Send the string(s) to actually translate in the standard text parameter(s); one context value applies to every text item in that request Compare output with and without context during QA to confirm it resolves the intended ambiguity (e.g., grammatical gender, word sense) Keep context content minimal — a few complete sentences is typically enough; avoid pasting entire pages
Known gotchas Context text is never translated, never returned, and is not counted toward character billing — only the text parameter's characters are billed Context still counts toward the 128 KiB total request body size limit, so very large context blobs can push a request over the limit Context does not create a persistent memory between calls — it must be resent on every request that needs it
